The October Birthstones

Most months just have one birthstone, but October is lucky enough to have two! Though most people consider opal to be the gem of the month, tourmaline, a bright pink stone, is also thought of as October’s birthstone. The two stones look very different but are beautiful in their own ways, and each has a unique meaning.

About Opals

Every opal is distinctive, encompassing a multitude of different colors. Because of this, many people consider opal to be a gem that inspires creativity and imagination in its wearers. The name “opal” comes from the Greek word “opallius”, which means seeing colors change. The ancient Greeks also believed that opal could give you the gift of prophecy, and so opals were worn by many seers and prophets. In Medieval times, opals were widely coveted by young women because it was said that wearing an opal in your hair would prevent your hair from losing its shine or color. (If you try that out, let us know- it might be the next big thing to prevent gray hair!)

About Tourmaline

Tourmaline is most often seen with a bright pink hue, but this gemstone can actually come in a variety of shades, including green and blue! There’s even a kind of tourmaline that is referred to as “watermelon tourmaline”, as it is green on the outside with a pinkish red color on the inside. Pretty cool, right? Tourmaline is said to represent compassion and spirituality, and at one point in history was even used by shamans who claimed they had healing powers. Many people have often mistaken tourmaline with rubies. In fact, there is a rumor that the red stones on the Imperial Russian crown, thought for centuries to be rubies, are actually tourmalines.

Though both gems are gorgeous, at Nelle & Lizzy, we consider opal to be the main birthstone of the month, and we have lots of opal jewelry for you! Later in October, we’ll be unveiling a new kind of ring, the Infinity Birthstone Band:
